The John Lennon - Deportation Proceedings

Letters to the INS - Diahann Carroll - singer

Singer and actress Diahann Carroll was one of top African-American stars in Hollywood films of the 1960s, including "Porgy and Bess" in 1959. She was the first African American woman to star in her own TV series, the award-winning "Julia," starting in 1968.

"If an appeal to the ethical or moral position of these freedom loving artists will not move you," Carroll wrote, "perhaps you will give a special allowance to Mrs. Lennon's position as a mother."
